HISTORICAL NOTE
Beginning in 1837 at London's Covent Garden theatre, the chemical process involving a heated Calcium Dioxide (Quicklime) cylinder, oxyhydrogen gas and a lens, that we now know as 'limelighting', focused an intensely bright beam of light onto centre stage, illuminating the star of the show.
By the beginning of the 20th century electricity replaced 'limelight' in universal use. The term "In the limelight" continues in common use to focus on anyone on their centre stage.

Letter to Special Needs Schools
G'day
My name's Alex and I'm doing just fine.
Autism made reading difficult for me all through my school years at Rainbow St Special Needs School in Randwick and Rose Bay Secondary College.
Thankfully my reading improved when my dad Ian started reading the Karey&Kareful Storybooks to me.
I liked the first book in the 5 book set, 'How We Met' so much I began reading it myself.
I was given the next 2 books for my 21st birthday last November 2021.
They are my favourite books!
I'm really looking forward to getting the new 2 when they come out in time for my next birthday.
In March this year 2022, I went to Rose Bay Secondary College to present a 3 book set to all the students there.
They all enjoyed them as much as I do.
Could I please come to your school Rainbow St and present a 3
Book set to all your students in Special needs classes?
I'd like to very much.
When books 4 and 5 are published later this year ld be very happy to come back again and present them to the students just like I was
Alex Chandler’s favourite books
that if Alex, who is an avid reader of the Karey and Kareful collection, embraces it, then it will undoubtedly resonate with others as well. Alex holds the fulfilling role of assisting Christopher in delivering and sharing these books with schools, and his personal favorite school to introduce them to is the IEF at Rose Bay Secondary College. Our IEF students are in gratitude for the books and are always happy to see Alex.
Alex Chandler graduated from the IEF in 2018, he was the inspiration for the success of the Karey and Kareful books.
Last Friday, Alex came to school with the author, Christopher and gave 20 sets of the 3 books to the IEF. The students from the IEF have enjoyed reading the stories and looking at the beautiful illustrations.
The story of the Karey and Kareful Books is a story of successful
collaboration.
Christopher created the characters in 2010 when working on a project designed to highlight mobility issues and tourism opportunities
for the disabled.
Annie has been an art teacher of kids from kindy to year 6 for over 20 years.
In August of 2020 she immediately related to Karey and Kareful, their travails and their story of camaraderie, looking out for a mate and helping out when someone is doing it tough.
It was 'love at first sight'.
Her talent as an illustrator brought them to life.
She's read the the first book 'How We Met' many times to her classes.
In those classes sometimes were kids with special needs. She noticed some of them very quickly developed an affinity with Karey and Kareful, their disabilities and their mateship and caring for one another.
One of Christopher's good mates has a son Alex who is autistic. Getting Alex to concentrate when reading had always been a challenge. However when his father began reading 'How We Met'
to Alex, he found to his surprise that Alex enjoyed the story and the characters.
Further, he is happy to read it with his father, and on his own, time after time - a remarkable turnaround.
We came to the realisation that if it is helpful to Alex and some other little ones with disabilities and special needs, maybe it will be a boon for many many more with special needs …
Hence our initiative -
How's Alex?
Our aim is to make the Karey and Kareful books available, free of charge, to all special needs kids in Sydney, then New South Wales and Australia.
Due to fantastic support from sponsors, we have now provided all 80 students and their teachers at Cromehurst Special Needs School with their own 3 book sets for Christmas.
The enthusiastic response from students, teachers and parents at both schools was most gratifying and encouraging.
Next we hope to replicate these responses by providing a 5 Book set, free of charge, to up to 1000 students in at least 20 Special Needs Schools in New South Wales this year.
We consider it a privilege to include your school in our 'How's Alex' initiative.
Thanks and Cheers

I related these experiences to Susie, who has been a special needs teacher for 25 years. Her first words when she starting reading 'How we Met' were - "I can see how this would be so helpful. I think this is not only fantastic for our special needs children at Cromehurst, but for school children in all primary schools as well.

Next we provided 40 students at Chertsey Special Needs School with their 3 book sets.
Then we provided, via our wonderful sponsors, 30 3 book sets to the Special Needs Section at Rose Bay Secondary College.
The enthusiastic response from students, teachers and parents at all schools was most gratifying and encouraging.
